Best Onion Search Engines In 2026: 7 Top Options

Quick answer: what is the best onion search engine in 2026?

There is no universal best. The right engine depends on your query set, how much freshness you need, and whether you value an index, a curated directory, or a scoped crawl. Compare tools on your own terms.

The ranking trap

Most lists of the best engines rank by popularity or by claims about index size. Neither tells you whether an engine will find the services your project cares about. A better question is: which tool returns unique, relevant leads for the queries I actually run?

Build your own comparison

Criteria	How to test it
Relevant coverage	Run a fixed query set and count unique addresses.
Freshness	Repeat the set after a few weeks and note changes.
Transparency	Look for published crawling or filtering information.
Usability	Check search, filtering, and export against your workflow.
Access	Confirm the onion link and whether mirrors exist.

Tordex

Tordex is a keyword index of onion pages. It is useful for broad discovery and for finding vocabulary you did not know to search for. Treat its results as leads and verify them.

Ahmia

Ahmia is a long-running engine with a clear-web presence and publicly discussed filtering. It is a useful baseline because its policies are easier to inspect than those of many smaller services.

Haystak

Haystak is often mentioned in discussions of large onion indexes. Size claims are hard to verify and can change. Test them with your own queries rather than trusting a number.

not Evil

not Evil is another keyword index that appears in onion search discussions. Check whether it is currently reachable and whether it adds unique results for your topic.

Directories

Curated directories are selective and can be better organised for a specific subject. They can also be stale. Use them as a second opinion, not as a definitive inventory.

A decision matrix

If you need...	Start with...	Add...
Broad discovery	Tordex	A second index
Documented filtering	Ahmia	A curated directory
Historical leads	An older index	Liveness checks
A scoped dataset	Your own crawl	Public indexes for comparison

A 2026 caveat

Engines and onion services change quickly. Any ranking, including this one, is a snapshot. Verify links, check dates, and re-run your comparison rather than relying on last year's list.
